A range of health support and advice was on offer to Bradford & Bingley’s 900 head office staff at a health awareness event.
Members of the Seniors Show the Way project, joined other partner organisations, to give advice to staff during their working day, encouraging them to take care of their health and use of the wide range of NHS and community services available.
The event was the idea of Vicky Young, a community health champion with Seniors Show the Way, who works at B&B’s head office in Crossflatts, Bingley.
NHS teams at the event included the stop smoking service, diabetes team, community development, health of men team and health trainers.
Catherine Pitts, team co-ordinator for Seniors Show the Way, said: “This event shows how one community health champion can have a positive impact on others by motivating their employer and colleagues to get involved in a health information event.”
Anne Capper, of B&B, said: “Keeping colleagues motivated and promoting a lively, vibrant working environment is a benefit to both staff and companies alike. Regular exercise and healthy eating promote increased energy and concentration, and we feel our health day is a great way to encourage colleagues to make a healthy choice to benefit their daily lives and future health.”
The Seniors Show the Way project aims to recruit 1,400 people aged over 50 who will encourage their friends, families and neighbours to eat more healthily, be more physically active and to get involved in activities that will improve their general wellbeing.
More than 360 older people across Bradford and Airedale have become community health champions to help spread the word about staying fit and healthy in later life.
NHS Bradford and Airedale won £600,000 from the Big Lottery Fund to run the project for three years. The Seniors Show the Way team is part of Bradford and Airedale Community Health Services.
