A mum has spoken of her shock after midwives at Bradford Royal Infirmary provided milk for her new-born baby that was nearly five months past its best-before date.

Brenda-Leigh Berry was born at the hospital early last Friday – the first child for 20-year-old Jade Berry.

The young mum, of Fencote Crescent, Fagley, was brought a bottle of Heinz Nurture baby milk by a midwife.

It was only after Brenda-Leigh had had her first feed, and drunk 40ml of the milk, that her aunt, Elizabeth Berry, 15, noticed it was out of date.

Miss Berry said: “We told the midwife straightaway and she said she would go and tell someone.

“She said the doctor said it would be fine.”

Miss Berry said she felt “fine” was not good enough.

“I wanted it when it was at its best,” she said. “I wouldn’t have minded as much if it had been a day or two but it was five months. They should have done more – that sort of thing should be checked every day, especially as it is for new-born babies.

“I was really shocked.”

A spokesman for Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said: “The Trust would like to apologise to Miss Berry for the out-of-date baby milk which was given to her baby while in the labour ward.

“We only keep a very limited supply of free baby milk in this particular area because most mothers choose to try to breast-feed their newborns at birth.

“When the mistake was made known to medical staff, the baby was checked immediately by a paediatrician and found to be safe and well.

“We would like to assure new mothers that robust systems are now in place in the labour ward so if they require formula milk this mistake doesn’t happen again.”
