The official opening of a £76,000 play park in Silsden has been postponed after the wrong equipment was installed.
After months of grant applications and fundraising for the 7 Up Activity Area, Silsden Youth Council handed over the cash and design specification to Bradford Council’s parks and landscapes team to manage the installation.
The play area was completed before Christmas, but youth councillors soon realised a piece of equipment called The Net, costing £12,000, had been installed at only 3.8 metres high, when it was meant to be six metres.
And the Basket Swing, costing £9,100, was meant to be 1.8 metres high, but was installed at 1.2 metres.
Pat Bottomley, Silsden Youth Council co-ordinator, and a town councillor, said she had received assurances from Bradford Council that everything would be put right. She said: “It has just been one thing after another. Children have still been playing on it and seem to be enjoying it.
“The youth councillors know it is going to be put right. It is a case of waiting.”
She said she had not been told when the new equipment would be installed and therefore could not give an official opening date.
Mick Priestley, Bradford Council technical manager in leisure services, said: “We are working hard with suppliers to resolve this issue.”
Yorventure, WREN, Keighley Area Committee and the Ward Investment Fund all gave grants to help the 7 Up project go ahead.
