The former Keighley man who starred in the original Star Wars trilogy returned this week in the final film in the series.

Peter Mayhew, who moved from Wheathead Lane, Keighley, to the States five years ago, appears in Revenge of the Sith.

The gentle giant, who stands seven feet three inches tall, again plays the hairy Wookie warrior Chewbacca in the science-fiction movie.

Peter, who spent the 1990s working in a South Craven timber yard, made the latest film after moving to Dallas with his Texan wife Angelique.

He met Angelique at one of the many science-fiction conventions he attends in response to the popularity of his character among Star Wars fans.

Peter had moved to Keighley in 1987 from the south of England, and immediately fell in love with the town.

He made many appearances as Chewbacca to raise money for local charities and became a keen supporter of Keighley Rugby Union Club.

In Revenge of the Sith, Peter plays a younger version of his character because the film takes place two decades before the action of the original three films.

Peter has been quoted as saying he looks different to his appearance in Star Wars, the Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

He said: "They had to make a different costume, because Chewie is now light-coloured. He's like a puppy that has one colour and changes as he gets older."

Revenge of the Sith is now showing several times daily at Keighley Picture House.
