Some traditions never change and anyone familiar with the history of the Otley Chevin Fell Race, always held on the first Wednesday in June, would have woken last Wednesday to the familiar sound of rain.

The race was organisers Neil and Sue Clayton's final event before they emigrate to France and the 114 runners who turned out to recognise this were rewarded with good weather for the 40 minutes that even the slowest runner needed to complete the course.

At the half way stage near Surprise View and with all the climbing behind him Gary Devine (P&B), winner in 1989 and 1991, had a comfortable 19 seconds lead over Karl Gray (Calder Valley) but Gary was not the first certain winner to ease off and be beaten in the home straight. Gary eventually finished seven seconds behind first time winner Karl's time of 18.13.

However, Gary had won the 10 mile/3000 feet Cader Idris race during the previous weekend so he might not feel too upset and his club Pudsey & Bramley, which has always been a strong supporter of the race, had five runners placed in the first seven to take the team prize.

Helen Sedgewick (Ilkley) repeated her 2003 victory by overhauling a six second deficit at Surprise View to clubmate Heather Dawe to win by 30 seconds in 22.43.

Jason Hemsley (P&B) was first local runner for the sixth consecutive year and the first runner for Skyrac was Roger Dawson.

The race was again generously sponsored by Clearview Windows of Otley which allowed Skyrac AC to return most of the entry fee in prizes.

Ilkley Round TableTrail Race and Fun Run

Leading Wharfedale Estate Agents, Dale Eddison, have agreed to sponsor Ilkley and District Round Table's 23rd annual charity race day for the 11th successive year.

The event which comprises a three mile Fun Run and and the 8KM Middleton Moor Trail Race, takes place on Sunday, June 12, from East Holmes Field in Ilkley, with proceeds going to local charities.

Bill Dale of Dale Eddison said: "The charity races are a worthwhile event in the calendar and we are delighted to be associates with the Round Table and its activities."

This year's Fun Run Committee Chairman, Kevin Jubb, was delighted with the news. He said: "It is a great boost to have Dale Eddison's sponsorship for another year. We really appreciate their valuable contribution and we thank them along with all our other sponsors, without whom the event would not possible."

Entry forms for both races are now available from Dale Eddisons offices in Ilkley, Guiseley and Otley; from Kevin Jubb Butchers and The Complete Runner in Ilkley; Chevin Trek in Otley or from the Round Table caravan which will be on Brook Street in Ilkley every Saturday.

Otley AC

On Thursday of last week 29 Otley AC members travelled north to Fewston reservoir for the last monthly handicap event.

The 4.3 mile race around the reservoir was one by relatively new member Jamil Parapia in 34:23 (a very fast 23:23 net), second finisher was Julian Mawson who finished 18 seconds adrift but ran even faster (22:41 net). Third finisher was Mark Blagg who just held off David Fox on a sprint finish up the hill back towards the car park.

This event saw a record number of participants and thus a record number of points available to the winner. The overall positions so far are: 1, Mick Jeffrey (77pts); 2, Phil Robinson (69 pts); 3, Mark Blagg (68 pts); 4, Tom Hannah (65 pts); 5, Jamil Parapia (63 pts).

Members also took part in two races at the weekend. The first, on Saturday, was the Kirby Malzeard 10k. This was won by club treasurer Julian Mawson in 34:50 and in third place was Jamil Parapia with 36:50.

Mick Jeffrey, David Fox and Don Buffham also took part in this race, which was part of the Black Sheep Brewery series. A successful race for the club also saw Otley win the team prize.

The following day was the date of the annual Thirsk 10 and Julian Mawson was running again. This time he finished fifth with a time of 53:50 (and a pb by exactly one minute). Fourth in this race was Neil Cayton (also 53:50) and other Otley members in this race were Howard Jeffrey 61 mins, Tom Hannah 67 mins, Jack Robertshaw 71 mins, Kath Robertshaw, Hannah Peacock and David Cattanach.

Skyrac AC

Skyrac's Duncan Asquith was the winner of Sunday's three mile Good Gallop Race from Pudsey Park. Admittedly his first ever victory owed something to the front runners going off course but Duncan demonstrated the benefit of having attended the FRA Navigational Skills Course, mounted by Skyrac AC, and had no difficulty in keeping to park paths.

Allegedly some of the prima-donna roadrunners half Duncan's age (47) took defeat rather badly with displays of temperament but Duncan was sanguine in his victory. For the record his winning time was a slow 17.02 but as they say, 'a win is a win'.

Skyrac's second prize winner of the weekend was Graham Breeze who was First V60 at the Pen-y-Ghent race. Graham was 77th in 63.59 and race winner from the field of 160 was Carl Roberts (Kendal) in 48.40

Martin Farrar took on the rather tougher challenge of the 20 mile 6000ft Duddon Valley race which had a high drop out from the 117 starters because of rainy conditions.

The winner was one of the hard men of fellrunning, Andy Schofield (Borrowdale) in 3.13.20 and Martin finished in 5.06.34.

Joggers or prize winners-all are welcome at Skyrac via www.skyrac.org.uk or 01943 874046.

Leeds get second

Leeds City AC's senior A team travelled up the A1 to the Gateshead International Stadium for round two of Division One of the North of England Track and Field League.

A good number of local athletes helped Leeds to second place behind Gateshead Harriers, and thus pushed them to the top of the division at the half way stage

Fresh from her inter-counties triumph of last week, Yeadon's Celia de Maria again showed her versatility with two fine middle distance performances.

A victory in the B 800m in 2.17.4 was quickly followed by a second place in the A 1500m in 4.44.9. And for good measure she also ran in the 4 x 400m relay team.

For the men, Martin Roscoe also showed his track versatility with an emergency 7th place in the A 400m hurdles in 67.6s. In his main event, the 3000m steeplechase, he ran an impressive 9.41.2 for a victory in the B string race.

There were further B string victories when Yeadon's Gill Keddie took the women's 3000m in 10.49.8 and Horsforth School student Melissa Karatas won the triple jump with 9.75m.

Bethany Staniland had a busy afternoon in events that she does not often get the opportunity to do in these league matches.

Her day began with the long jump in which she finished third in the B string with 5.08m.

However, she then went on to win the B high jump with 1.50m, and in mid high jump competition she went off to win the B 100m hurdles in 17.3s.

Her best performance of the day came with season's best of 58.5s for second place in the A string of the 400m.

Meanwhile older brother Andrew Staniland was at the opposite end of the country competing for Sale Harriers in a higher league claim capacity in the British League Division Two match at Eton.

Here, he won the A long jump with 7.37m and came second in the B javelin with 55.07m. He also ran a fairly swift 11.06s in a non-scoring 100m.
