FORMER Super League player Gareth Greenwood has been brought into the Cougar side to add strength in depth to Gary Moorby's team.

The ex-Huddersfield player has joined on an initial one month loan and is set to join the 17-strong squad for Sunday's game against Dewsbury Rams.

He trained with the team this week and is desperate for first team action after being sidelined by the Halifax club. He has been playing in their Under-21s side and was keen to make a move.

"He wants to be playing senior football and is hungry to play at the highest level he can," said coach Gary Moorby.

"I tried to sign him before the start of the season, but at that time he decided to stay at Halifax. However, things haven't turned out as he hoped but he can play a very important role for us."

Greenwood started out with Halifax and went to Huddersfield where he made a number of Super League appearances.

He is regarded as a utility forward who can play anywhere in the back row, and is rated a useful scrum half.

Moorby added: "He will be a very useful addition to our squad and could add a little of the spark we have been missing."

He will also add extra strength to the squad which has been hit by a number of injuries.

Moorby and his coaching staff went on a 'spying mission' to watch Dewsbury in action against Sheffield last weekend when they were beaten 31-24 by Sheffield Eagles.

"It was a surprise result because Dewsbury have several former Super League players in their ranks and were tipped as one of the favourites to win LHF National League Two," he said.

The defeat was their second of the league campaign and they will be determined to put that right on Sunday's visit to Cougar Park. But the Keighley side is equally determined to get its league season into full swing and want to put the defeat by Swinton Lions, in their last home game, behind them.

"The stop-start season has been very frustrating for everyone but we need to beat the Rams. I will be a tough game because they have some very experienced former Super League players in their ranks.

"We don't need to fear anyone in the league. We have the ability to beat any other team in the division, but we must cut out the errors that have proved very costly so far."

Greenwood's 'on-loan' contract is due to be reviewed at the end of the one month deal and may be extended if he provides the extra ingredient the team is looking for.

Moorby is also searching for other on-loan signings to give the squad a lift in their bid to book a place in the end-of-season play-offs.
