FORMER Bradford City star Peter Beagrie presented trophies and medals at Grassington's sixth annual junior tournament last Sunday.

Beagrie's son was one of the 380 young players who took part as teams, not just from Craven but from the Harrogate, Bradford and Keighley areas, enjoyed a football extravanagnza. Even a team from Bolton - Horwich St Mary's - entered the event.

Competitions took place for five different age groups. Seven teams entered both the under-7s and under-10s sections, with sides playing one another on a round-robin basis.

In the under-9, under-10 and under-13 age groups, teams were split into two groups of four with the top two in each group going onto compete in the champions league and the bottom two in each group competing in the shield category.

Winners were - Under-7s: Settle Wolves, runners-up: Pannel A; Under-9s Champions League: Grassington, Shield: Westville; Under-10s: Beckwithshaw Saints A, runners-up: Beckwithshaw Saints B; Under-12s Champions League: Grassington under-11s, Shield: Sutton under-11s; Under-13s Champions League: Drighlington B, Shield: Settle Panthers.

Grassington's senior first team helped out at the event, making bacon butties for the many spectators present.

Organiser Kevin Paylor said: "One of the best things about the event was there was no trouble from the kids. It was competitive, but all the games were played in the right spirit."

All youngsters who took part received medals.

Danny Bathers and Peter Bradley each scored four goals for Settle Panthers in their shield success. Settle under-13 Wolves improved on last year's performance to take home bronze medals as captain Ben Mitchell and Danny Fox scored excellent goals.

Two teams from Settle were also entered into the under-12 competition. Settle Dynamos just missed out on a champions league place, losing on penalties to Drighlington B.

Goals from William Jackson and Matty Cardus saw Settle Speedos beat Drighlington A 2-1 to reach the champions league.

They went into the final match still in with a shout of winning the trophy but a 0-0 draw in their final game saw them finish third overall.
