The Danny Cadamarteri deal may not be dead after all.

Less than a week after City appeared to write off any chance of the striker coming back to the club, it appears that a move could be resurrected.

Chairman Julian Rhodes, currently away in Jersey, had issued a hardline statement claiming he was "fairly confident that we won't be able to reach any form of agreement with regards a contract".

But the Telegraph & Argus understands that the position may have changed, with more talks expected to follow.

City are reluctant to say anything publicly for fear of repeating the Stephen Hunt fiasco.

The club were confident of unveiling the former Brentford midfielder last week and announced a new arrival was in the offing.

But having flown in to Yorkshire and undergone a medical, Hunt

suddenly back-tracked by revealing that Reading had stepped in at the 11th hour. The Irishman has spoken to the Royals although no deal has yet been confirmed.

City were left fuming by Hunt's unexpected u-turn and are determined not to be made to look foolish should another deal break down.

So far Colin Todd has added one player to last season's squad with the capture of former England under-21 international goalkeeper Russell Howarth as back-up to Donovan Ricketts.

The stumbling block with Cadamarteri, who is surplus to requirements for Sheffield United boss Neil Warnock, is that he still has another year on his contract.

If City can strike a deal, it would be nothing like the money he was on during his first spell with the club.

Another side in the Champion-ship is rumoured to be interested but City are said to be Cadamarteri's first choice should he leave the Blades.

City had also been linked with Walsall winger Darren Wrack. But the player, like the club, insists the reports are well wide of the mark.

Todd is in the market for a left-sided wideman and Wrack, who operates most of the time on the right, said: "I've heard a few rumours but not that one."

Meanwhile, young City centre half Paul Denvers came off the bench to play the second half for England under-18s as they drew 0-0 against Norway at Port Vale.

And Dean Windass continued his hot scoring streak in the Northern Masters.

Windass, City's 28-goal top scorer last term, netted six times for a Middlesbrough side which also featured Peter Beagrie, John Hendrie and Chris Kamara.

Windass helped Boro to victory in the four-team regional heat, beating Newcastle 4-2 in the final.
