The Yorkshire flag flew at half mast over Burley this week as a sign of respect for one of the county's most famous sons, who died at the weekend.

Richard Whiteley, who lived in Burley Woodhead, was a loved and respected figure in the area, and villagers and celebrities alike have been shocked by his death.

The county's emblem, which is usually flown on Yorkshire Day, was put up in memory of the man who never forgot his roots despite his international fame.

The affable Countdown host died in Leeds General Infirmary on Sunday just days after undergoing heart surgery.

He had been rushed by ambulance to Bradford Royal Infirmary in May after being struck down with pneumonia.

The star, who was asthmatic, had been apparently in good health before being hit by pneumonia, and it is understood a virus may have sparked the devastating illness, and subsequent heart problems.

All week tributes have been flooding in from stunned friends, colleagues and fans of the presenter who had appeared to be making a good recovery after heart surgery.

Colleagues from the worlds of television, art and sport, have spoken of their grief at the death of a good friend. Even the Queen - apparently a fan of Countdown - was said to be 'saddened' by his death.

The TV presenter was a familiar figure around Burley and Ilkley, where he was known for his wit and charm, and his willingness to help out.

Burley Community Council member Tom Sumner said: "He was a great bloke. He shopped in the village, and he helped us out with the Christmas lights.

"I put the Yorkshire flag up for him on Monday, and put it at half-mast. It was something I felt I wanted to do."

A statement issued yesterday on behalf of his partner, Kathryn Apanowicz, and his close family asked that his funeral remain a private occasion.

"However, a memorial service celebrating Richard's life will be held in September, to which members of the public and the media will be invited. Details of the memorial service will be available in due course."

The statement went on to say: "We would like to thank everyone who has sent cards and messages of condolence and sympathy, as this has brought us comfort at this very difficult time."
