A Shipley community centre is to bring some soul into the town centre when it holds its first live music event.
The concert on Saturday will be the first of a series of cultural events at the Kirkgate Centre, as requested by the public.
Bradford and Leeds-based The Stalks and Bradford-based Wiful Missing will play country-pop and folk-rock from 7.30pm.
Paul Barrett, a trustee of the centre, said: “We asked what people wanted and this was high up the list.
“Local people are passionate about Shipley, about live music and good beer. There’s a real ale and cider bar.”
Other requests for activities at the centre have included a community cinema, more activities for young people and an “alternative market” where local people could sell things they make or grow. The Kirkgate Centre will be responding to the requests with similar events in the New Year.
Mr Barrett said: “When we took over the running of the centre from the Council, we asked people what they wanted.
“There was a strong sense that people love living in Shipley. But despite some great art, cafes and restaurants appearing in the town centre, it still feels like more can be done to create a lively town centre that offers something for everyone.
“We hope that the Kirkgate Centre can help make that happen.”
Tickets are available from the Kirkgate Centre, opposite Shipley Town Hall, for £3 in advance, or £4 on the door.
