A young woman motorist was killed when her car was involved in a head-on collision on a moorland road near Bingley yesterday.
The driver, 21, believed to be from Keighley, died at the scene of the horrific crash on the Otley Road at High Eldwick.
Her silver Vauxhall Corsa was involved in a collision with a green Volvo XC60 car just after 10am.
The accident happened on the brow of a hill between Heights Lane and Dick Hudson’s pub.
The cars were travelling in opposite directions, the Corsa towards Menston and the Volvo towards East Morton, and both were severely damaged.
A third car, a blue Ford Ka, which was travelling behind the Volvo, sustained minor damage after hitting debris.
Emergency services, including firefighters from Bingley, Shipley and Rawdon, and the air ambulance, were called to the scene.
West Yorkshire Police’s Major Collision Enquiry Team also attended.
The woman driving the Corsa was trapped in the wreckage of her vehicle and firefighters took two hours to free her, using heavy cutting gear.
The 65-year-old woman driver of the Volvo was severely shocked and was taken by ambulance to Airedale General Hospital.
Police sealed off the road while the rescue operation and investigations into the cause of the fatal accident took place.Traffic was diverted via the moor road to Baildon. The road remained closed late yesterday afternoon.
It was sunny at the time of the crash and it is thought visibility may have played a part in the tragedy.
The dead woman has not yet been named.
