A Saltaire trader has started a campaign to encourage people to support the village’s traders by shopping locally.

Georgia Mack, who runs arts and crafts shop Magic Number Three, in Victoria Road, plans to distribute window stickers to more than 100 Saltaire traders next week, to get the Love Local, Shop Saltaire campaign up and running in time for Christmas.

She will set up a website and a newsletter and organise events to encourage people to support shops closer to home.

She said: “This is a campaign I am starting to encourage local people’s awareness of supporting their local shops and ensuring that the independent stores thrive in this economic climate.

“Just through talking to people about the idea behind the campaign, I’ve already convinced some people to take the slogan on board and do their Christmas shopping locally.

“One woman came back in with all her bags and was really happy that she’d found everything she wanted. “There’s so much choice and quality in Saltaire, it’s such a great place to shop.”

Mrs Mack has enlisted the help of Saltaire designer Michael Lewis to create the campaign’s logo, which is currently on display in the window at Magic Number Three.

“Everyone needs to see it is a nice place to be shopping,” she said.

Mrs Mack hoped the campaign would keep running in the long term.

She said: “I see so many people nipping on the train to Leeds and I realised there is so much in our area.

“Particularly in this financial market we need to support local shops to make sure they are still here next year.”
