An armed robbery took place at a bespoke jewellers in Saltaire today.

At 10.20am police cordoned off Dot the Jewellers in Victoria Road.

A witness said he saw two men burst their way into the jewellers.

He said: "I just went round the corner and rang the police."

Teresa Hartley, manageress of Salts Village Bakery in Victoria Road said the robbery took place at about 9.45am as she was serving a customer who stood next to the door.

She said: "He shouted ‘Oh my god there’s been a robbery and rang the police’.

"I ran to see John the jeweller, he’d been in the shops by himself. It was a right mess. Glass everywhere.

"He said there had been two of them and a Samurai sword and axe were involved.

"There’d been a car parked on the other side of the street for days. It’s a black Clio with a Billabong sticker in the back.

"That was the car they drove away in. We heard it screech as it drove off down Caroline Street. We’ve told all of that to the police.

"They’ve obviously been watching the place and know what it’s like. Before nine o’clock it’s really busy here because of all the students going to college and then just before ten it all goes really quiet. That’s when they did it".

Police have cordoned off Dot Jewellery Limited in Victoria Road and detectives were quizzing next door traders and bar staff in Don’t Tell Titus.

Inside the jewellers, glass cabinets had shattered on the floor, display cases were empty with only a few rings left in them.

Some of the rings cost thousands of pounds each. Forensic officers were sifting through wreckage looking for leads.

Scenes of Crime officers were also examining a black Renault Clio, believed to be the getaway car, which had been abandoned in Thompson Street, off Wycliffe Gardens, Shipley.
