The Royal Mail is set to launch a new set of stamps for 2009 featuring British design classics ranging from the mini skirt to the Mini car.

A different set of ten stamps will be published every month and will include a red telephone box, Concorde, London Underground map and post box.

With the stamps due to go on sale on January 13, the Telegraph & Argus took to the streets of Bradford to ask residents what designs they would like to see.

Many of the answers had a local flavour, with people keen to see some of Bradford’s key buildings featured on a set of stamps.

Not surprisingly, the Alhambra Theatre, built in 1914 and refurbished in 1986, was among the favourites.

Those who responded to the poll described the building as a jewel in the crown of Bradford.

Others said they thought historic buildings such as Bradford City Hall and Bradford Cathedral would not look out of place on a stamp. Contemporary suggestions included the National Media Museum and Bradford Ice Arena, on Little Horton Lane.

Julietta Edgar, head of special stamps at the Royal Mail, said: “Special stamps mark unique moments, great anniversaries and vital cultural themes.

“Next year’s programme will take stamps further than before with a unique collection of fascinating images and subjects.”
