A five-year-old Bradford bookworm has been rewarded for reaching a milestone in reading.
Lewis Leadbetter, from Wyke, is the first under five in the district to pick up ten Bookstart Bookcrawl certificates. The scheme is designed to encourage children to visit the library and was launched by Bradford Council in association with the national Bookstart initiative.
Once signed up, children are given a sticker every time they borrow a book. After collecting four stickers they are presented with a certificate. Lewis has now collected his tenth certificate after reading a total of 40 books from the library.
He was presented with his award and a book token at Wyke Library. And Lewis also gave his baby brother Mason, who turns one next week, his own library card membership, helping him to start on the Bookcrawl too.
Councillor Anne Hawkesworth, the Council’s executive member for environment and culture, said: “This is a well- deserved certificate and shows that Lewis clearly has a love of books and going to his local library. This scheme will give children a love of reading that will hopefully follow them through life.”
