Simon Waye had a special Christmas time delivery on the backseat of his car – a grandson.
He grabbed his car keys when his daughter shouted that that her baby was on the way. But before they reached Airedale General Hospital at Steeton, near Keighley, daughter Mikeshia had already given birth. She delivered Lucas Christopher on her own as the car headed over the hill from Highfield, Keighley.
By the time they reached the hospital car park Mikeshia was cuddling her new son. Midwives were stunned to hear a baby’s cries when they went out to the car. And new father Chris Procter, who arrived at Airedale minutes after Mikeshia, said: “As soon as I opened the door I saw them both. I was shocked but overjoyed.”
Simon, a trainer with tyre company ATS, lives with 20-year-old Mikeshia, in Redcliffe Avenue, Highfield.
