Members of Bradford’s Pakistani community will tomorrow mark the first anniversary of the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

About 50 people are expected to gather at the home of Asif Naseem Rothor, president of the Bradford Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), to pay tribute to Miss Bhutto, who was killed in a gun and bomb attack on December 27 last year.

She became the victim of a terrorist attack while addressing an election rally in the garrison city of Rawalpindi.

To mark the anniversary, PPP members in Bradford are due to read passages from the Koran at Mr Rothor’s home in Keighley Road.

Ghazanfer Khaliq, a Bradford councillor and PPP member, said: “The Bhutto family has a long affiliation with Bradford. Benazir Bhutto, her father and mother, have been to Bradford a number of times and the family has a special feeling towards Bradford.

“Benazir Bhutto was a strong woman who fought for democracy to be established and move the country away from dictatorial regimes. She fought against terrorism and was a beacon of hope for a lot of people in Pakistan. It is important to mark her legacy.”

Coun Khaliq (Lab, Bradford Moor) said there would be another gathering in the next few weeks, where the Pakistani High Commissioner Wajid Shamsul Hasan, would pay tribute to Miss Bhutto.

Hundreds of thousands of people are tomorrow expected to gather at her grave. Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari, Bhutto’s widower, and Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani are due to lead the mourners at the Bhutto family mausoleum in Garhi KhudaBakhsh.
