An operation to target criminals who strike at night has started in the Bradford area.

Four police divisions, Bradford South, Airedale and North Bradford, Calderdale and Kirklees, are working together to stop and arrest those travelling at night to commit burglaries and other crime.

It is co-ordinated through a central operations room and involves specialist road traffic staff and local officers deployed at specific locations to provide an immediate response to suspicious vehicles or people.

Detective Inspector Peter Craig, of Airedale and North Bradford Division, said: “The police at Airedale and North Bradford realise it is very distressing to become the victim of house burglary as it is a particularly invasive crime.

“Over the past five years police operations have cut burglary offences in the Bradford district by more than 30 per cent, but recently that have started to rise again.

“In response, and to reassure communities, police officers at Airedale and North Bradford are conducting intensive Christmas and New Year burglary reduction operations dedicated to reducing house burglaries and focusing on catching and convicting active burglars.

“The police can only succeed, however, with the co-operation of the public.

“Householders are urged to ensure their houses are left secure and that valuable items are not left on display – especially car keys – overnight.

“We also need the public’s support in providing information about who is committing offences of burglary, reporting any burglaries they see happening and who is receiving the stolen property.

“Extra police officers will be visible over the festive period in North Bradford and in the Aire and Wharfe valley.”

Detective Chief Inspector Steve Hopwood, of Bradford South Division, said people should remain vigilant.

He said: “During the festive period, homes are often left empty as people visit their relatives. By taking simple measures you can help yourself and reduce the chance of becoming a victim of crime.

“These include leaving lights on, using timers, drawing curtains, not leaving expensive items in view and most simply making sure you lock your doors and use burglar alarms if you have one.

“Residents should also look out for each other and keep an eye over neighbouring properties, reporting any suspicious activity.”
