A Cleckheaton man with a violent criminal record was given a suspended prison sentence yesterday after assaulting a man in his home.

Jamie Jackson, 21, of Providence Street, Scholes, attacked a man at an address in Heckmondwike in August, causing him injuries including a broken nose, bruising and lumps and bumps to his head.

Leeds Crown Court heard that Jackson had two previous convictions for assault causing actual bodily harm.

He pleaded guilty to a similar charge and was sentenced by Mr Recorder James Goss QC to nine months imprisonment suspended for two years, with a supervision order and a total of 200 hours unpaid community work.

The judge told Jackson: “Although there was a background to this offence, its seriousness was clearly activated by the victim being assaulted in his own home and having to escape from you when you lost your self control and assaulted him quite viciously and caused serious injury.”

Mr Recorder Goss added: “I do not find you pose a significant risk of serious harm to the public. But you are getting very close to that situation.

‘‘A further offence of violence is likely to be met by a finding of dangerousness.”

He went on: “I am giving you an opportunity. If you don’t take it you’ll only have yourself to blame.”
