A man who died in a collision on a country road lived in Turkey and was visiting his family for Christmas, it has emerged.

An inquest into the death of Leslie Roberts, 56, was opened and adjourned yesterday at Bradford Coroner’s Court.

Mr Roberts had been in England to visit his daughter and brother, whom police have not named but live in the Keighley area, police said.

Officers initially struggled to identify Mr Roberts because he was carrying no identification when he was in an accident with a green Toyota Avensis minicab.

He had been walking down dark moorland road about three-quarters of a mile away from Harden, heading away from Long Lee at 2am on Saturday.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “He was from Keighley originally and he was across here visiting his family over the Christmas period.

“Mr Roberts was 56 years old and has a brother and a daughter in the Keighley area.”

Following the incident, Harden Parish Council chairman Michael Andrews said he was shocked by the tragedy but surprised anyone would be walking on that stretch of road in the dark.

Close to the spot where the collision happened is a 50mph speed limit sign which was only introduced on that stretch a year ago.

A spokesman for Arrows taxis in Keighley said: “The driver is in shock. We all are.”

A post-mortem examination was carried out on Monday to establish the cause of death.

Anyone with information about the accident should call Keighley Road Traffic Police on 0845 6060606.
