The last Woolworths stores in Bradford will close on January 5, the stricken firm’s administrators have revealed, with some stores closing as early as Saturday.
The company’s superstore at the Victoria Centre in Girlington, Big W, is in the final batch of closures that will bring an end to the famous retailer’s 99-year presence on Britain’s high streets.
Woolworths’ final two weeks on Britain’s high streets were mapped out as administrators released a schedule of closures for the failed retailer.
January 5 will mark the last time that the Woolworths brand will trade under the wind-up being led by administrators Deloitte.
At the Girlington store 87 staff will lose their jobs with about 100 more staff at other outlets in the district being made redundant in the next couple of weeks.
Administrators confirmed last week that all Wool-worths stores would close, at the likely cost of 27,000 jobs, after failing to secure a buyer for the business as a going concern.
Among the first to go will be the Keighley store on Saturday, where 31 staff will lose their jobs. The Shipley store in Market Square will close on Monday, January 5, and 18 staff will be made redundant.
Twenty staff will lose their jobs when the Ilkley store closes on the same date.
Otley will close on Tuesday, December 30, with the loss of 22 jobs, as will Skipton, where 19 jobs will go. The Pudsey store closes on Friday, January 2, where there will be 26 job losses.
Other closure dates include: Heckmondwike, Tuesday, December 30; Dewsbury, Saturday; Batley, Friday, January 2; Halifax, Saturday; Huddersfield, Monday, January 5, and Leeds, Friday, January 2.
Woolworths is still negotiating with BBC Worldwide over the sale of the chain’s stake in their joint venture 2 Entertain. It is reported that the commercial arm of the BBC has slashed the amount of money it is prepared to pay for 2 Entertain, which publishes DVDs and CDs.
