A housewife who threw a pan of hot water over her husband during a row has been made the subject of a two-year supervision order.

Bradford Crown Court heard today how Shirley Flynn’s husband, Allen, suffered ten per cent burns to his back, shoulders and right arm as a result of the incident in August.

Ewan McLachlan, prosecuting, told Judge Jonathan Durham Hall QC that from the outset Mr Flynn did not want any court proceedings to take place against his wife.

Initially 49-year-old Flynn, of Parratt Road, Laisterdyke, was charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily, but last month she pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of wounding.

After the incident in August, Flynn, who had no previous convictions, told police that she did not know the water in the pan had boiled.

She said she thought it was still cold and wouldn’t have thrown it if she had known it was hot.

After reading a pre-sentence report and psychologist’s report Judge Durham Hall said it was clear that Flynn was continuing to suffer from clinical depression.

“I hope everything goes well for you now,” he told Flynn. “Obviously I must impress upon you that this sentence is to assist you to cope with the many problems that you face.

“You are basically the home-maker, the home-provider, the home-earner and it is not surprising with your illness that you snapped on this occasion, but you must benefit from this help and you mustn’t do it again.”
