A Coroner today called for further safety measures to be carried out at an accident blackspot.

Speaking at an inquest into the death of an 84-year-old cyclist on the A629 at Flappit, near Keighley, in May this year, Roger Whittaker said he will write to Bradford Council with his suggestions, which include reducing the 40mph speed limit.

The Bradford inquest was told that Donald Mitchell, of Crossfield Road, Oxenhope, was riding towards Denholme when he was struck side-on by a Volkswagen Golf at the crossroads near the Flappit pub.

He was taken to Airedale General Hospital suffering from head injuries and died the following day.

A post-mortem examination found the cause of his death to be severe brain injuries and inter-cranial bleeding resulting from a fractured skull.

Mr Whittaker heard that visibility had been good that day and that the car driver Susna Hook’s vision would not have been obscured at the time.

He said that while having no direct bearing on Mr Mitchell’s death, a number of road safety issues had been raised during the inquest.

In particular he questioned the parking of cars outside the Flappit pub close to the junction.

He said: “The parking bays (outside the pub) are crying out to be de-activated. I shall be writing to the local authority and suggesting this and that the speed limit should be reduced to 40mph as a genuine improvement to safety.”

Mr Whittaker recorded a verdict of accidental death.
