A man caught breaking into a shop was arrested when his getaway car overturned, a court heard.
Anthony King and his accomplice wore dark clothing and black balaclavas to drill out the locks at the Premier Shop, in Buttershaw Lane, Buttershaw, Bradford.
Patrolling police officers caught the pair red-handed at 4.30am on May 30, prosecutor Euan McLachlan told Bradford Crown Court today.
They fled in a Skoda but King was arrested after the vehicle rolled over.
King, 24, a machinist, of Beldon Road, Great Horton, Bradford, pleaded guilty to attempted burglary.
Mr McLachlan said a “burglar’s kit” was used to drill out the locks at the shop and force the shutter.
Gerald Hendron, King’s barrister, said his client had been a prolific shoplifter in his teens.
Now married with children, he was highly regarded by his employer.
The attempted burglary was an isolated blip since he had made a fresh start in life, the court heard.
King was sentenced to a community order with 18 months’ supervision and 150 hours’ unpaid work.
