A woman has told of her shock after a horrific road accident which killed a 44-year-old pedestrian.
Michela Burgess, 25, and other members of the public nursed the man during in the final minutes before he died as a result of the collision in Otley Road, Lower Baildon.
The man, who is from Baildon but who has not been named, was in collision with a Nissan Navara pick-up truck near the junction of Otley Road and Esholt Lane at 8.55pm last night.
Miss Burgess, a barmaid at The Shoulder of Mutton in Otley Road, was one of the first on the scene after the accident, which happened just yards from the pub.
She telephoned the emergency services after a passer by ran into the pub asking for help.
But, despite their best efforts to save him, the man died at the scene.
Miss Burgess, of Baildon, said: “I have never seen anything like it, it was horrific.
“All of a sudden, this guy was laid in the middle of the road.
“Another friend of mine stayed with the guy holding his hand until the ambulance and the police got there.
“We just did what we could by keeping him warm but, because of the way he was laid, there was nothing else we could do.”
The road was closed for more than four hours, with pub regulars redirecting traffic until the police arrived.
The driver of the Navara and a woman passenger were said to be “devastated” after the accident.
Miss Burgess said: “We gave the lady a brandy. She was in complete shock. I don’t think she even knew what was going on. They were devastated because it was completely unexpected.
“It is such a shame this has happened so close to Christmas,” she added.
Roads police from Airedale and North Bradford now wish to speak to the driver of a car which was following the Navara at the time of the accident.
The motorist stopped for a short time before driving away.
A police spokesman said: “Officers wish to stress the driver is not in trouble or in any way at fault, but they believe he or she may have witnessed what happened.”
The driver of the car or anyone else who has information should contact PC Phil Day on 0845 6060606.
