THE police watchdog has determined it does not need to investigate after a serious crash on the outskirts of Bradford city centre after a "brief pursuit".

The incident happened on Shipley Airedale Road at 9.50pm on Sunday.

According to West Yorkshire Police, officers spotted a vehicle which "failed to stop for them" on Barkerend Road.

Minutes later, the vehicle - a Renault Clio - was in collision with a Mercedes G Wagon on Shipley Airedale Road.

Two men, aged 34 and 24, from the Renault Clio were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

On Monday, a West Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: "Due to the prior police contact, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has been informed which is mandatory in these circumstances."

The IOPC has this afternoon issued an update to the Telegraph & Argus.

A spokesperson for the IOPC said: "We have completed our assessment of a referral from West Yorkshire Police following a serious collision in Bradford on December 1.

"Having considered the available information, we did not identify any obvious concerns with the actions of police involved in a brief pursuit prior to the collision.

"In light of this, and the fact the injuries sustained were not life-threatening, we determined an investigation is not required."

This morning, a spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said the two men from the Renault Clio remained in hospital with serious injuries.

Police are continuing to investigate, they added.

Three people in the Mercedes G Wagon were taken to hospital with injuries believed to be minor.

The incident led to the closure of Shipley Airedale Road and surrounding routes until Monday lunchtime - causing traffic chaos during that morning's rush-hour.

The main junction of Shipley Airedale Road, Church Bank and Barkerend Road was closed in all directions while collision investigation officers worked at the scene and recovery of the vehicles took place.

The Mercedes G Wagon ended up in the grounds of the historic, Grade II*-listed Paper Hall.

One resident called the crash "major" - while another described witnessing a "heavy" police presence and helicopters on Sunday night.

At the scene, people spoke of their shock - and others talked about the major travel disruption caused by the collision.

Anyone with information or footage which might help police with their enquiries should call 101, quoting log 1760 of December 1.
