A KEIGHLEY primary school has retained its 'outstanding' rating following the latest Ofsted inspection.

Merlin Top Academy, which first made the top grade in 2019, was visited in October by Government inspectors.

In a report just published, they say the Braithwaite Avenue school "has taken effective action to maintain the standards identified at the previous inspection".

The school – part of the Northern Education Trust – is said to offer a "calm, caring environment", with an ethos of kindness running through it.

"It is determined to help every pupil reach their potential," says the report. "Pupils know that the school wants them to be the best they can be. Many of their achievements are truly remarkable, especially for those from disadvantaged backgrounds, who achieve well. This is testament to the tailored support many pupils receive."

Ofsted describes how the school places equal importance on pupils' academic success and their character development.

Staff "understand their vital part in making a meaningful difference in the lives of their pupils", and the children recognise their responsibility in helping others. "It is part of being a ‘Merlin Topper’," say inspectors.

"Pupils appreciate the high quality of the taught curriculum, which serves as a ‘window to the world’. And teaching staff skilfully bring learning to life."

There's also praise for the wide range of extra-curricular activities.

"These opportunities enhance the pupils' educational experience and deepen their understanding of themselves and others," says the report.

"From making popcorn and learning the importance of teamwork at forest school to serving tea and cakes at the Good Shepherd Centre, pupils develop essential life skills and build connections within their community."

Principal, Neil Cooper, is delighted with the report.

"I am over the moon that Ofsted has recognised the incredible efforts all stakeholders make on a daily basis," he says.

"Our 'outstanding' rating is a true testament to the hard work of our talented and dedicated staff, students, trustees and governors. We have high aspirations for every single one of our students. I am so pleased that Ofsted has recognised a culture of kindness, inclusivity and support at Merlin Top, and the high quality of education. We will continue to make choices to benefit all children with the aim of improving life chances."

The school is holding an open morning on Wednesday, December 11, and prospective parents are welcome between 9am and 10.30am. Anyone interested should contact the school.
