Work towards the creation of a "flexible space that people can enjoy day and night" are underway at the site of a former market hall.

Kirklees Council has started work at the site in Heckmondwike town centre.

Contractors are said to be repairing and expanding the paved areas, installing "versatile containers" to support pop-up markets and seasonal events, and adding seating and sculptures.

The new space will be available for regional organisations and community groups to host events, and it is hoped that it will provide a welcoming place for people to socialise.

The space is "expected to be open in the new year," according to a Kirklees Council spokesperson.

The works are part of the Heckmondwike Blueprint, which intends £1.5 million of investment in the town centre over the next decade "and beyond," and follows the demolition of the old market hall earlier this year.

Councillor Graham Turner, cabinet member for finance and regeneration, said: "Heckmondwike is a town that holds great heritage and history, and is loved greatly by local people.

"It’s great to see we’re moving to the next stage of the Heckmondwike Blueprint and providing an area for residents and visitors to enjoy."
