An analysis of burglary insurance claims data has put Guiseley's postcode in the top 20.

The study analysed millions of home insurance quotes from MoneySuperMarket Home Insurance customers, to identify the postcodes with the highest and lowest burglary claims from 2021 to 2023.

Guiseley (LS20), with 29.32 claims per 1,000 quotes, was ranked 20th in the country.

The top three burglary hotspots were Edgbaston in Birmingham (B15), Olton in Solihull (B94), and Herne Hill in London (SE24).

Bradford's BD5 area, which includes Bankfoot, Little Horton, and West Bowling (and the Telegraph and Argus offices), had a rate of 12.46 claims per 1,000 quotes.

Skipton's BD23 area (which also covers the likes of Embsay, Gargrave, Grassington, and Hebden) recorded 5.73 claims per 1,000 quotes.

No burglaries within YO1 (central York) were recorded within the time period analysed, according to the tool when tested by this paper.

Alicia Hempsted, insurance expert at MoneySuperMarket, said: "While it can be startling to see it laid out like this, it’s important to remember that taking simple steps to secure your home can help reduce the likelihood of being burgled.

"Our research also shows that burglary claims are trending downwards, with the number of claims per 1,000 quotes falling by around 12 per cent in the last year.

"However, it’s unlikely that people will see this reflected in how much they pay for their home insurance, with the average cost of a buildings and contents policy increasing by 18 per cent for the same period, according to our home insurance index.

"If you’re looking to save money on your home insurance, compare policies and prices to find the best deals.

"Installing a burglar alarm or upgrading old windows and doors can help bring your quote down in price, while also making your home more secure."

MoneySuperMarket's tips for preventing burglaries include fitting good locks on windows and doors, marking possessions with a UV security pen, installing cameras and automatic sensor lights, and keeping valuables away from windows.

If burgled, advice includes reporting the incident to the police immediately, and avoiding touching anything (to preserve fingerprints).
