BRADFORD Council gritters covered 700 miles this morning as they worked to make the district's roads safe.

A yellow weather warning for snow and ice, announced by the Met Office over the weekend, was in place from 7pm on Monday until 11am today.

Many parts of Bradford and its surrounding areas were hit with snow showers last night and, for some, these continued into the morning.

After heading out on Monday night, the Council's gritters were busy again first thing this morning with the teams tackling all Priority One routes from 5am.

Crews also covered Priority Two routes across higher ground, while hand gritting teams were out in Queensbury and Wibsey.

Gritters have been out from 3pm today, with temperatures set to fall this evening.

Two night patrols will be monitoring the network between 8pm and 7am, gritting any hazards.

Councillor Alex Ross-Shaw, Bradford Council’s executive member for regeneration, planning and transport said: “Our gritting teams were out again this morning from 5am treating all Priority One routes (including cycleways) covering over 700 miles.

“So far today, we have also had our crews out on Priority Two routes across higher ground including in Queensbury, Denholme, Thornton, Clayton, Heaton, Wibsey, Allerton and Buttershaw.

“We have also had two hand gritting teams out covering the footways in Queensbury and Wibsey.

“With temperatures set to plummet as we head into the evening and overnight our crews will be out again from 3pm to treat the Priority One routes, with two night patrols out monitoring the network between 8pm and 7am and gritting any hazards.”
