MORE potential modern slavery victims were referred to West Yorkshire Police in the most recent quarter, new figures show.
According to Home Office data, 165 potential victims of modern slavery were referred to West Yorkshire Police between July and September so investigations could take place.
This was up from 143 the quarter before, and an increase from 148 in the same period in 2023.
Across the UK, a total of 4,758 potential victims were referred to the Home Office between July and September - up 10 per cent compared to the previous three months.
Of the referrals, 1,498 were children. This included 47 referrals to West Yorkshire Police.
Adam Hewitt, a spokesperson for the Hope for Justice charity, described modern slavery as a "hidden" and "unusual" crime as many people affected do not see themselves as victims.
A Home Office spokesperson said: "Modern slavery is a scourge that dehumanises and traumatises people for profit, and we are committed to tackling it in all its forms."
West Yorkshire Police's website states: "Modern slavery is an absolutely horrific and despicable crime, where victims are seen as the commodity that can be sold or used to make money.
"Modern slavery is all around West Yorkshire."
