A PLAY heading for Bradford highlights the contribution of the Women's Land Army in the Second World War.
Lilies on the Land is a "poignant, powerful production" about four women - Margie (Hope Shooter), Poppy (Lauren Fleming), Peggy (Naomi Fowler) and Vera (Claire Pearson) - who meet at land girls.
The moving play is based on letters and interviews with real life Land Girls, along with songs from the period, offering "a rich and authentic portrayal of their experiences".
The play explores the journeys of four women from different walks of life, navigating the challenges of farming life amidst the pressures of war. With humour and heart, the women share their stories of facing the hardships of their new reality, finding camaraderie and resilience in adversity. Maybe work clothes full of mice and toilet rolls falling from the sky are just what it takes for these girls to get through!
Produced by Shipley Local Theatrics, who have presented engaging and entertaining theatre since 2016, Lilies on the Land is a timely reflection on the role of women in the war.
* Lilies on the Land is at Bradford Playhouse Studio from Thursday, November 14 to Saturday, November 16.
