IN NOVEMBER 2011 visitors to Cartwright Hall Art Gallery were in for a treat.
David Hockney’s largest and most ambitious painting at that time was displayed there.
Measuring 12m by 4.5m, Bigger Trees Near Warter is made up of 50 smaller canvases that depict a landscape near Warter, East Yorkshire. The artwork was created in 2007 and combines traditional painting techniques with digital technology.
It looked splendid in the grand setting.
To celebrate the arrival of the painting free guided tours of the art gallery were held until the end of November.
The work is no longer David Hockney’s largest painting - it was overtaken by A Year in Normandy, a 295 ft long frieze that captures the changing seasons in his garden in Normandy, France.
