A DRAMATIC fire which engulfed a fairground vehicle shut the M62 for six hours at the weekend.

The M62 motorway was shut both ways after multiple fire service vehicles were called to the scene between Junction 28 at Tingley and Junction 29 near Leeds at around 11pm on Saturday.

Images emerged of the huge lorry blaze that saw multiple fire service appliances needed to bring the fire under control.

The fire service have now confirmed that the it was a fairground vehicle which was on fire.

A spokesperson for the West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called on Saturday at 10:55pp to the M62 Junction 28-29 eastbound.

"Five crews attended from Ossett, Hunslet, Morley and two from Dewsbury.

"This was large fairground vehicle. Firefighters used breathing apparatus and hose reels to extinguish the blaze.

"There were no reports of any injuries."

Mass delays occurred as the stretch of motorway was closed for a six hours - reopening at 5.36am on Saturday morning.

The westbound carriageway opened at around 2.30am as the recovery and clean-up on the eastbound continued.
