POLICE have revealed some sad news as one of their dogs has had to be put to sleep - just weeks after he was still chasing suspects.
West Yorkshire Police announced via Facebook this lunchtime that seven-year-old Kai had died, saying "some very sad news to report about Police Dog Kai".
The German Shepherd was put to sleep with his partner, Chris, by his side, after becoming "very ill" due to "numerous complications" from an issue that first arose last October.
Kai was rushed for emergency surgery back then and fluid was removed from around his heart and stomach.
A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: "This then led to a year of complications and numerous visits to the vets.
"During this time, Kai was still doing his job and a few weeks prior he was detaining suspects who had tried to flee."
Kai was allocated to Chris in August 2018 at nine months old.
The force spokesperson said: "Kai was said to be a little immature but had something about him that showed promise.
"From day one, he did everything that was asked of him and since then has excelled at being a police dog."
They added: "Sleep well Kai, thank you for your service".
