WEST Yorkshire Police (WYP) will need to investigate whether officers missed any opportunities to find a missing teenage boy sooner before he was sadly found dead, a watchdog has said.
Logan Slater, 14, a pupil at Brighouse High School, was reported missing on October 21.
He was pronounced dead at Calderdale Royal Hospital after being found in Beechwood Park, Brighouse, on October 23.
After his death, WYP referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
The IOPC has now told the Telegraph & Argus that WYP is required to carry out an investigation to "consider whether there were any missed opportunities by police to have located Logan sooner".
A spokesperson for the IOPC said: "We received a referral from WYP on Thursday, October 24, due to prior contact the force had prior to Logan Slater sadly being found dead.
"After careful assessment, we have decided that an investigation is required to consider whether there were any missed opportunities by police to have located Logan sooner but that it is suitable for the force to carry out.
"We would expect WYP to re-refer to the IOPC if further information comes to light which may impact this decision.
"Our sympathies are with all those affected by this tragedy."
The T&A asked WYP for a comment but no response was received by the time of publication.
An inquest into Logan's death was opened at Bradford Coroners' Court this morning.
Coroners' officer Laura Sinfield told the court: "On the morning of October 21, Logan's school contacted his parents saying he had not arrived.
"His parents called 999 and a missing person's investigation was commenced by police."
She said Logan's body was found in Beechwood Park, Brighouse, on October 23.
Police and paramedics were called and he was taken to Calderdale Royal Hospital, where he was sadly pronounced dead, Ms Sinfield told the court.
Assistant coroner Peter Merchant said a provisional cause of death had been given as hanging.
He adjourned the inquest to a later date.
Tributes were paid to Logan after his death was announced.
On a GoFundMe page set up to help his parents, one person described him as a "beautiful boy" from a "lovely family".
Another person said: "RIP Logan, forever missed."
Someone else commented: "He will be sorely missed."
