A Yorkshire-made film inspired by Donald Trump's so-called 'Muslim ban' has qualified to be considered for the 97th Academy Awards (also known as the Oscars).

The short film, Hamdardi, was shot in Leeds - with familiar landmarks like Bridgewater Place even spottable by the eagle-eyed - but it is set in an unnamed US city.

Some of the key scenes were filmed in Leeds Arena.

The film tells the story of a bereaved immigration officer who takes pity on two young Iranian travellers after they find themselves caught in an unfair travel ban.

The fictional tale is inspired by a series of executive orders by President Trump in 2017, which restricted certain foreign nationals from entering the USA and which took on the moniker of the 'Muslim ban.'

Hamdardi is now available to stream on the YouTube channel Omeleto, having been published to the site on October 29.

The film will be available to watch on YouTube for the next two months.

Hamdardi was co-directed by Ashley Tabatabai, who is also an actor, having appeared in the likes of Avenue 5 and Bank of Dave 2: The Loan Ranger; and by Stefan Fairlamb, who has been involved in Take Us Home: Leeds United, A Discovery of Witches, His Dark Materials, and more.
