More than half of 17-34-year-old drivers have honked their horns out of anger at other road users in the past year, according to a survey by IAM RoadSmart.

That compares to 42 per cent of those aged 70 or over who are liable to honk, according to a survey of 2,000 people by the independent road safety charity.

More than 81 per cent of those surveyed have been tailgated on a 30mph road in the past 12 months.

Three-quarters reported being tailgated on a motorway or dual carriageway, with men more likely to fall victim than women.

The survey also found that middle lane drivers are a source of wrath, with 63 per cent confessing to having undertaken or seen someone undertake a lane hogger, risking points on their licence or a £100 fine.

83 per cent strongly support the use of cameras to detect and prosecute tailgaters.
