In a debate chaired by Deputy Speaker and Labour MP for Bradford South, Judith Cummins, the Renters' Rights Bill passed its Second Reading on Wednesday, October 9, and has now entered the Committee Stage.
The bill includes a ban on 'no-fault' evictions and aims to give greater security and stability to renters.
Among its proposals, the bill would give tenants more time to move if evicted; introduce an Ombudsman with the ability to handle complaints and enforce solutions; and end the practice of bidding for rent.
The bill would also make it illegal for landlords to discriminate against those with children or in receipt of benefits, as well as strengthening rights for owners of pets in rented properties.
Following the debate, Ms Cummins said: "No renter should be left feeling insecure about their future.
"Renters across Bradford South deserve proper protections under the law."
