The Muslim Women’s Council have set up a new online service aimed at resolving family issues.
The new National Sharia Council (NSC) has been formed to help address matrimonial challenges and find solutions according to the Quran and Sunnah.
It has a focus on female empowerment and accountability through a professional code of conduct and transparency.
Bana Gora, CEO of Muslim Women’s Council, said: “Over the years we have been approached by many service users expressing concern about various Sharia councils across the country.
"We explored womens’ experiences and discussed the need for accountability, a professional code of conduct and transparency in order to regulate Sharia Councils. Following on from this, we have been working on developing a service to meet the needs of women and Muslim families across the country.”
The service has been set up to offer compassionate, informed, and culturally sensitive support.
The NSC has various Ulama, Imams and Muslim male and female Scholars representing various schools of Jurisprudence found in Great Britain.
Deliberations are made on a case by case basis, with input from UK family law practitioners and other specialists as and when required.
Dr Amra Bone, consultant and lecturer, said: “I welcome the launch of the National Sharia Council and I am looking forward to leading a panel of both male and female experts in their fields, in family mediation, Islamic jurisprudence, family law in the British legal system and scholars of Sharia law”.
The Muslim Women’s Council - led from Bradford - was set up in 2009. Its mission is to ‘empower women for the benefit of society’.
