A Bradford singer who started over and went back to her roots is celebrating after being played on national radio.

Sinead Campbell, who previously went by Premaura, has returned with new soulful songs following a two year break from making music.

Her next chapter is drawn from her Jamaican and Irish heritage and love of classic soul music.

Just a few months into her new career, Sinead has made it onto BBC Radio 1 and performed at Bradford’s Alhambra Theatre and The Great Escape Festival in Brighton.

Speaking about her journey in music, Sinead said: “I was dimming my voice down, dimming down certain subjects. I was like, what I need to do is have a break. I took two years away from music and that was one of the best things I ever did. It allowed me to clear my head.

“I’m so much happier now. I just want to make soul music. I really love the singers of the 70s - Nina Simone, Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding. I want to properly sing in my songs and give myself to the audience. You’re not holding yourself back then.

“The sound I’m making it’s soul with a little touch of RnB, it’s got a hint of nostalgia. I’m trying to find that balance of the past with a modern twist. It’s for people who enjoy a voice. My first two songs are love songs. Someone described it as the songs they would put on on a Sunday when it’s cosy, Sunday love songs.”

Sinead added: “Part of that transition, when I was Premaura that was me before I’d really started looking into my Jamaican afrocentric history and honouring my ancestry, going back to Jamaica and my Celtic Irish side. When I did I felt this different sense of inner peace.”

Sinead was played on BBC Radio 1 for the first time during Future Sounds with Victoria Jane.

Her popular song, ‘With You’, was described as being among the “very best in the UK”.

The presenter introduced Sinead as a “beautiful voice from the North”.

‘With You’ and ‘Angel’, are now available to play on Spotify, Apple Music, Soundcloud, YouTube and more.
