A new sculpture celebrating nearly 400 inspirational Leeds women is set to be unveiled in the city.
The piece, named Ribbons, has been created by artist Pippa Hale and will be situated at the top of the the gardens, at the gateway to the SOYO development, between Leeds City College’s Quarry Hill campus and Leeds Playhouse.
The installation will be officially revealed on Saturday, October 12, during a launch event between 1pm and 4pm at Leeds Playhouse, to which the public is invited.
Visitors can enjoy activities for children, performances by musicians, and the opportunity to meet some of the women featured in the sculpture.
Ms Hale will also be on hand to discuss the artwork, which features, among others, suffragist Isabella Ford, former Olympic boxer Nicola Adams, and Leeds West Indian Carnival founder Gertrude Paul.
Ribbons also pays tribute to unsung heroes of Leeds like Tina Suryavansi, who runs Homeless Hampers, and Rebekah Wilson, who set up the charity Zarach to combat child poverty in the city.
The project is the brainchild of Leeds West and Pudsey MP, and Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves, and led by Leeds Arts University in partnership with Leeds City Council and Leeds City College.
