A BRADFORD-based organisation and a city community champion have both been honoured at a prestigious awards ceremony.

This year's Sporting Equals Awards - which celebrate race equality in sport and physical activity - took place in London last week.

BEAP Community Partnership brought home the Mind Wellbeing Award, while Akbar Khan was named Community Champion of the Year.

The Mind Wellbeing Award recognises BEAP Community Partnership's work in using physical activity to support mental health, particularly within ethnically diverse communities in Bradford

Hiron Miah, chair of BEAP Community Partnership, said: "We are absolutely delighted and deeply honoured to win this award.

"It's a true testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff, volunteers and service users who have all played a part in this achievement.

"We know how crucial mental wellbeing is, especially in communities like ours where people face both cultural and socio-economic challenges.

"This award encourages us to continue our work and keep driving positive change in Bradford."

Lukman Miah, BEAP Community Partnership's centre and programmes manager, added: "Winning the Mind Wellbeing Award highlights how sport can truly change lives.

"The sessions we run - from football to badminton - help our participants not only stay active but also work through mental health challenges in a culturally sensitive setting.

"The recognition we received will only strengthen our resolve to expand our services and reach even more people in the community.

"This award is for all of us - and we hope it inspires others to join in and make a difference."

Meanwhile, Akbar Khan was awarded the Community Champion of the Year accolade for his long-time involvement with the Bradford PHAB Club.

His family first became involved with the charity through his two brothers, who suffered from muscular dystrophy.

They sadly passed away aged 16 - but Akbar has remained part of the organisation ever since, now serving as chairman.

He works as part of a team arranging inclusive activities for club members, including abseiling, archery, flying lessons, rock climbing and theme park trips.

After winning the title, Akbar said he felt "privileged".

He added: "This award is for everyone who is connected to Bradford PHAB Club and, of course, the community of Bradford.

"Thanks to everyone who voted - it means a lot and makes me proud.

"Let's continue to transform the lives of countless individuals in our community by providing the access and opportunities to everyone."
