A MOTORCYCIST has sadly died following a crash involving a car on a major road.

The driver of the car has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

The collision occurred between a black motorcycle and silver Kia Rio on Whitehall Road, near to the junction of New Road, in Drighlington this morning just after 9am.

The 51-year-old man sadly passed away at the scene.

A road closure was put in place while investigation works were carried out.

A spokesperson for the force said: "Police are appealing for witnesses following a fatal road traffic collision in the Drighlington area of Leeds.

"The Major Collision and Enquiry Team (MCET) would like to speak to anyone who saw or has footage of the collision which took place today (Saturday, September 28) on the A58 Whitehall Road.

"It occurred at about 9.10am when a black motorcycle and a silver Kia Rio where in collision while near to the junction of New Road.

"Emergency services attended and medical attention was provided to the 51-year-old male motorcycle rider who sadly passed away at the scene.

"The other driver was treated for minor injuries and later arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

"He remains in custody.

"A road closure was put in place while full investigation work was carried out.
