A PENSIONER'S year-long battle for a new wheelie bin has finally come to an end - after the Telegraph & Argus got involved.

Last week, 77-year-old Jennifer Lancaster contacted the T&A complaining that the wheels on her green general waste bin broke and came off in 2023 and claimed this was a result of how it had been handled and emptied by refuse workers over the years.

She said she phoned Bradford Council at the time to request a replacement bin - but a year on, she had not received one.

The T&A contacted Bradford Council about this issue earlier this week - and the authority has now finally delivered a new bin to Jennifer.

Jennifer said she and her husband Brian were physically unable to drag the broken bin to the end of the road for the rubbish to be collected.

Thankfully their son could help them with this - but Jennifer, who lives on Hatfield Road, Undercliffe, told the T&A last week: "It's the principle.

"We've worked hard and paid Council tax all our lives.

"The Council spends a lot of money on all these various projects and things like City of Culture - yet they can't replace a green bin for two elderly people after a year.

"Why isn't this sorted by now?

"It's not good enough and I wonder how many other people like us are in this position.

"Does the Council really care?"

The T&A put those concerns to the Council - and the authority delivered a new bin to Jennifer today.

"We apologise for any delay in getting the new bin out," a Council spokesperson said.

Jennifer told the T&A she was happy to finally receive a replacement bin.

"It's good news," she said.

"We're pleased we've not got to think about this any more.

"Thank you to the T&A for helping us with this - and thank you to Bradford Council for finally bringing us a new bin."

The Council's website states: "Some common types of damage to bins, such as to the wheels and lid, can be repaired and the Council offers a free bin repair service.

"Some damage, though, is not repairable and you will need to order a new bin.

"If you think your bin needs repairing, please request a repair online or call 01274 431000 and our staff will advise you."
