BRADFORD Council says it will take action after a car was spotted being driven on a pedestrianised Bradford street.

Last week, most of the fencing was removed from Market Street, leaving much more space for people to walk.

Now only a few areas allocated for planters remain fenced off.

A red Volkswagen Golf was spotted on the route at around 7pm on Friday.

Work to pedestrianise the road began in April and it is hoped it will “encourage people to spend more time in the city".

One onlooker said: "I was simply walking over to Bradford Forster Square rail station when I saw the vehicle on the new walkway.

"I was pretty shocked because I assumed the area was no longer being used as a road."

Bradford Council said it would be reviewing and reinforcing the signage in due course.

A council spokesperson said: “This vehicle has entered Market Street ignoring the no-through route signs at the junction of Cheapside and Lower Kirkgate and also not complying with the one-way system which is in place during the works – we will be reviewing and reinforcing the signage in this area in due course."

The closure of Hall Ings, Market Street, and other city streets to traffic was first announced in March 2020, when the Government awarded Bradford millions from its Transforming Cities Fund.

The funding was part of the devolution deal between the Government and West Yorkshire and was aimed at making the city centre more attractive to pedestrians.

The vision is for Market Street to host stalls, events, and bring more 'café culture' to the centre.
