A WARD councillor has branded a hit-and-run in which a teenage pedestrian was critically injured "absolutely horrendous" and "truly shocking".

West Yorkshire Police cordoned off Halifax Road for much of Tuesday following the fail to stop collision on Monday night.

The vehicle was "believed to be travelling above the speed limit" when officers initially spotted it.

On Tuesday afternoon, it was confirmed two 33-year-old men have been arrested in connection with the incident.

One man was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury through dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of a collision.

The other was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

The police scene on Tuesday morningThe police scene on Tuesday morning (Image: UGC) Councillor Angela Tait (Royds) said the teen should have been getting up and going about his normal routine, rather than battling for his life in hospital.

She told the Telegraph & Argus: "This sounds as if it was an absolutely horrendous incident and it is truly shocking.

"The 17-year-old male should have been waking up this morning and going about his daily life, not fighting for his life in a hospital bed!

"My thoughts and prayers are with the victim and his family.

"I plea to anyone who witnessed this or anyone who may have dashcam footage to pass this onto the police to assist in their investigations and help to trace the driver."

A marked police car sighted the vehicle on the opposite carriageway on Halifax Road just before 8.30pm.

As the patrol car turned around, the vehicle was now out of sight.

Officers then located a pedestrian on Halifax Road who had been hit by the vehicle which had failed to stop at the scene.

A voluntary referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct was made.

Upsetting images of the aftermath of the incident have been circulating online.

The T&A has chosen not to publish these images but asked police for more details of the nature of the victim's injuries.

Police responded by stating that the 17-year-old has suffered life-changing injuries.

The Telegraph & Argus arrived at the scene following sunrise at 7am on Tuesday.

Many on their way to work were forced into diverting from the busy road due to the lengthy cordon.

Cars heading to Bradford were seen turning around just before the junction with Fleece Street.

First Bus services 508 and 681 had to run on Farfield Avenue to avoid the cordon.

The Post Office was forced to shut but the Tesco Supermarket could be accessed via foot - the car park being closed.

One man who lives on Halifax Road told us: “I heard all the emergency services just after 8pm last night. It’s been like this all night.”

On to the other side of the cordon, which was located at the junction of Farfield Grove, and a few Coral Windows vans were parked up on the grass verge near the Tesco petrol station.

The vehicles were unable to be driven up the passageway as usual so workers had to carry window frames into the warehouse.

This morning, a spokesperson for the force said: "At 8.25pm yesterday evening (Monday, September 16) a marked police car sighted a vehicle on the opposite carriageway believed to be travelling above the speed limit on Halifax Road, Bradford.
