EMPOWERMENT is nice, but it doesn’t create long-lasting changes in your life.

As a woman who has dedicated her life to self-love and self-development for the past eight years, after a lifetime of chaos, grief and lack, I’ve learned what works and what doesn’t. Although there is no cookie-cutter, one-size-fits-all technique when it comes to transforming your lifelong term, there are master keys that unlock a person’s hidden potential.

Motivation is great, but it’s short-lived. It comes and it goes. You can feel motivated and empowered during a workshop, but then you go back to habitual living once you leave. We all do it, so there’s no judgement here. As humans we are wired to choose what feels safe and often that safety is our comfort zone, even though it may not be all that comfortable or right for us.

Now, depending on how much you want to change your life, maybe you want to break cycles of unhealthy relationships or you want to break cycles of poor money management and debt. Maybe you want to feel healthier and fitter, or maybe, as in my case, you want to change all three and more, empowerment and motivation will only take you so far.

The key to real, long-lasting results is consistency, we all know this but what we don’t all know, is that it's our emotions which interrupt our consistency, therefore blocking our desired transformations.

Our emotional states determine our action or inaction. How many of us have the intention to stay committed to a goal, but then life happens and before we know it, we’re back in our old habits of the relationships, the spending or the eating that we had decided we would change.

Most people don’t even realise that they are constantly reacting to life emotionally and making all of their decisions based on emotions. Feelings are not facts and when emotions are high our intelligence is low, which is why we’re all so good at giving advice (as we’re not emotionally invested in other people’s problems) but we’re not so good at taking our own advice because our emotions cloud our judgement.

As we continuously react to life emotionally, we have no control of ourselves or our lives. We are dependent on external factors to make us happy and when things don’t go the way we hoped, we make decisions from a state of disappointment. We stop taking actions that take us forward and we go back to our false sense of comfort keeping us stuck in a life we dislike but feel incapable of changing.

Emotional regulation is a master key to unlocking your true potential. As you self-regulate through all ups and downs in life and you surround yourself with others who are also self-regulating, the level of willpower is increased.

You are no longer dependent on others to make you feel good so you’re no longer reacting emotionally to your habitual triggers that unplug you from your personal power. Positive momentum is created and this is where long-lasting transformation takes place. You’ll develop better communication skills, connected relationships, conflict management, better finances and health all because of ‘better emotions’ within you consistently.

If you want to realise your true worth and create a future that is better than your past, emotional regulation is the missing key. That’s why I created Better Emotions CIC. We teach our service users how to create a self-love lifestyle that prioritises emotional regulation.

I noticed that many service users have relied on empowering organisations for years for guidance and support. The way we teach at Better Emotions CIC creates self-empowering techniques that are backed by science to help regulate the nervous system and rewire the brain to accept and make positive changes.

Many service users go to organisations and are soothed in the moment but they aren’t moved emotionally into consistent action. This creates dependent clients. Better Emotions CIC focuses on what I like to call ‘soothe then move' - a framework focused heavily on self-accountability and implementation of the empowering concepts learned in our workshops.

Without implementation and courageous, consistent moves towards my goals, I wouldn’t be the woman I am today. The evolved, happier, healthier version of myself that lives life passionately and creates empowered transformations within others for a living.

The second master key to long-lasting transformation is evidence that a person ‘like you’ can really change her life to one that is amazing. This evidence comes from lived-experience storytelling. The more organisations that feature this in a way that ignites self-belief, coupled with emotional regulation techniques to stay self-empowered consistently enough to build forward-facing momentum, the more success stories women in Bradford will have. It will create a ripple effect that keeps on empowering and transforming.

We will see more women rising up and using their lived experience as the reasons that they CAN change instead of the reasons they can’t.

Recently awarded £20,000 by the National Lottery Community Fund, Better Emotions CIC, is now open for women to register for Emotional Regulation & Self-Love Workshops, held every other Tuesday from 11am-2pm at The Jubilee Centre, Jermyn Street, Bradford BD1 4EJ.
