PARENTS, children and staff at a Bradford school conquered their fears by abseiling down a tall building to raise nearly £5,000 for charity.
A team of parents, children and staff from Sandal Primary School in Baildon faced their fears on Saturday, September 7, as they abseiled down the Moda building in central Leeds to raise funds for Candlelighters, which supports families in Yorkshire who have a child with cancer.
Adrian Thompson, a staff member at Sandal, said: “Through the abseil, we initially hoped to raise £1,925. We’ve all been astonished by the generosity of our friends, family and the Baildon and Sandal school communities, and are now at just over £4,700. It’s quite humbling.”
Sandal chose to support Candlelighters because they have supported several families at the school over the last few years.
They raised £2,200 in May for the Pink It Up campaign, and staff member Adrian Thompson ran the Ali Brownlee 5K in Middlesborough in June to raise a further £500. There are further events planned for next year.
Candlelighters are based near the Leeds General Infirmary and enables families who have a child with cancer to make the most of their time together. They support parents, run groups for siblings, and fund research into childhood cancer.
