A SURVEY on Bradford city centre shows public safety is a major concern.

More than 500 people have so far taken part in Bradford Civic Society's survey on the state of BD1.

Members of the public have responded saying they do not feel safe in the heart of Bradford after 5pm - and they perceive it as being "lawless".

It comes after the Telegraph & Argus shared shocking footage showing about 25 off-road bikers "terrorising" City Park earlier this week

Civic society bosses said "many people will be rightly outraged at the brazen attitude of the culprits".

A spokesperson for Bradford Civic Society said its survey currently showed public safety was emerging as the "number one concern for people".

They added: "Over 500 people have responded to our survey so far, and it's very clear that safety in Bradford city centre is an increasingly concerning issue for the majority of respondents.

"The recent shocking footage of masked bikers terrorising people in City Park really brings those concerns into sharp focus, and many people will be rightly outraged at the brazen attitude of the culprits.

"The fact that these frequent scenes are being played out right outside City Hall and the City of Culture office is particularly alarming.

"Anecdotally, people have responded that they don't feel safe in the city centre after 5pm, and that they no longer want to come to events in Bradford when it's perceived as being so lawless.

"This clearly needs urgently addressing by the police, the Mayor and others to avoid jeopardising the success of 2025.

"Ordinary Bradfordians are increasingly fed up of it."

The T&A put these comments to West Yorkshire Police, Bradford Council and West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA).

In response, a West Yorkshire Police spokesperson said enquiries were being conducted into the anti-social riding in the city centre earlier this week.

They pointed out that two offenders caught riding dirt bikes across City Park were hauled before the courts earlier this year.

A Bradford Council spokesperson said: "We work in close partnership with the police to deal with crime and anti-social behaviour.

"Every big city has its challenges but we want to make sure Bradford city centre and the district as a whole is a safe and welcoming place for people, whether they are visiting, shopping, working or living in the area."

WYCA did not provide a comment.
